Exercising Egoistically

Does it do charm or harm? A little experience that I had come upon. Last Saturday, me & faisal went for a 20km run. Initial plan was him doing biking with blinking lights (starts at 5am) & me doing the run. Meeting up with Bacin & Anita, he eagerly changed his mind & decided to do a 5km run, then turn back while the other continue running. Ada kawan nyer pasal, he decided that he wanted to run =) i am glad for him, but worried as he had not been running for very long time. Then we started running at 5am, me & faisal pacing each other till the 5km point. Then, he decided to turn back. Wei, strictly walking only, ur knee is not strong yet.. Yes... only to find out that he ran all the way back; reasoning himself that there were alot of runners, segan nak walk.. his footballer's knee has not recovered fully.

Then i continued to chase Bacin & Anita.. but they were too fast. It was only at Petronas U turn that we ran together. There N then; my ego alter decided to resurface & started pacing with Bacin. Though it was a consistant run, but i had not done a road run since my accident. Eventually i buka langkah & ran. After the run, both me & faisal jalan kengkang kat melaka water world =)

Ego attitude played its part well. Used correctly, it enhances performance & vice versa. You just need to know how to manipulate it. Its how some athletes are able to bounce back from zero; fast. Its just that they had enough ego to do so, they knew their level before & would like to keep it. And how some others suffering in races due to ego. They have done that before, & suffering to race despite insufficient training. To a certain level, injury starts to creep in. At times, it is ok to say no to races though everyone else are participating =)

  1. very well said. i ran the last 3 races eventhough it was very obvious to both my knees and me that I just couldn't, for the very same ego you were talking about. i just didn't want the other runners to think I was just one of those 'masuk je lah' competitors who ended up gossiping while walking.

  2. Very good point indeed. As a weekend enthusiast, it's not the ego nor the bounce back I'm concern but the Monday back-to-work scenario that worries me the most. Jalan kengkang masuk office lagi teruk.

  3. talking about egoism, do u know how to walk non-kengkang a day after a long run? ... the trick is to walk really slowly while facing your hp screen - act as if u r reading the sms.
